If you choose fast mode, Session will use APNs push notification service to deliver push notifications to your device. If a new message is found, it is presented to you as a notification on your device. If you choose slow mode, the Session application runs in the background and periodically polls its swarm (see What is a swarm) for new messages. Session’s iOS client has two options for notifications: background polling (slow mode), and Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) (fast mode). When using fast mode neither Google nor the OPTF can see the contents of your messages, who you’re talking to, or exactly when messages are sent or received. Registration of your Session ID and unique push notification token to the OPTF push notification server is necessary for detection and signaling of new messages and is low impact as registration occurs using onion requests meaning your Session ID and push notification token are never tied to any real world identifier (such as your IP address). These exposures are fairly minimal, Google will likely already know your device’s IP address through telemetry data or other applications on your device using push notifications. Additionally, you will expose your Session ID and unique push notification token to an OPTF operated push notification server, for the purpose of providing the actual notifications to the Google FCM server. This requires that your device IP address and unique push notification token are exposed to a Google operated push notification server. If you choose fast mode, Session will use Google’s FCM push notification service to deliver push notifications to your device. If a new message is found, it is presented to you as a local notification on your device. Session’s Android client has two options for notifications: background polling (slow mode), and Firebase Cloud Messaging (fast mode). Session has also undergone a security audit by Quarkslab, the results of which can be found here. Session is a project of the Oxen Privacy Tech Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to provide the world with better access to digital privacy technologies. Session’s code is open-source and can be independently audited at any time. For more technical details, read our blog on onion requests. For more on this, check out What is an onion routing network? below. Onion requests protect user privacy by ensuring that no single server ever knows a message’s origin and destination. When using Session, your messages are sent to their destinations through a decentralised onion routing network similar to Tor (with a few key differences), using a system we call onion requests. Session keeps your communication private, secure, and anonymous. However, when you use Session, the identities of the people communicating are also protected. Conversations in Session are end-to-end encrypted, just as in most private messengers. When I can pull my eyes away from the beautiful island vistas and take a break from possessing sharks and boars, there are a lot of details to admire, too. It encourages me to close the map and look around at the landmarks to figure out where I really am. In fact, it leads to a chain of treasure hunts, which not only provide me with new maps but a story that gives me more details about the island's troubled history. At a dock on the coast I help myself to a raft, raise the sail, and cruise serenely around the blue waters of the island looking for the landmark shown on the map, which takes me to a treasure chest… which contains another map. Hidden treasuresĪlso helping me forget that this woman fired a gun in my vicinity is the fact that she rewards me with a treasure map, my number one favorite item in open world games and the perfect excuse to explore more of the vast island. Despite the jarring gunshot that started this relationship, it turns into a sweet and gentle friendship and there's a nice moment of community after dinner where I play my ukulele (another minigame) with other musicians while the townsfolk dance. Once I deliver her crab, she invites me to dinner, and during a cooking minigame I bond with her daughter, who is about Tchia's age. In fact, the beta began with a woman getting my attention by firing a rifle in the air-a pretty alarming moment considering Tchia is just a little kid.īut it turns out this gun-toting villager just wanted me to find her a crab to cook for dinner, which I eventually did (it might have even been the same crab I possessed to snip that chain). And while searching for her dad, there are plenty of other quests to complete, some given by other inhabitants of the island. She is searching for her father, who has been abducted by an evil tyrant named Meavora-the same guy who animated those creepy cloth zombies. Tchia's goal isn't just exploring for the fun of it (though there's plenty of that). I was now safely on the ground and had nearly reached the distant town in under a minute, while it would have taken ages to get that far on foot. I leapt back into human form, fell for a while, then spied a rock on the ground, which I soul-jumped into. I soul-jumped into a passing bird and flapped my wings to cover more distance, but was still pretty high up when my soul-meter started running low. I leapt off and sailed in the town's direction using my colorful glider, but as my stamina ran out I was still far, far above the ground. Just one example: While at the top of a mountain I spotted a tiny seaside town along the coast, far off in the distance. I soul-jumped into a passing bird and flapped my wings to cover more distance Once I've got some practice with her skills and powers, the island quickly transforms from a beautiful view to an acrobatic playground. With the soul-jump and her natural traversal skills, Tchia is like Spider-Man crossed with Corvo Attano, only, you know, she's a sweet little kid. She can slide on her butt down steep hills, gently soar through the air with a glider (until her stamina runs out), and even clamber to the top of a tree, rock it back and forth, and fling herself from it like a catapult. And you don't even need a particular reason to possess something: rolling down the road as a barrel is fun on its own.īut don't think for a minute that Tchia needs to soul-hop into birds or dogs or gas cans to get things done: she has plenty of talents herself, especially when it comes to traveling across the island. Rocks can handle long falls, even if people can't. Don't want to risk climbing down a steep cliff? Just leap Tchia's soul in a nearby rock and roll yourself off the edge. If that's not enough, Tchia can possess not just living creatures but also inanimate objects, though once she's soul-hopped into a rock, lantern, barrel, or coconut, those objects definitely become animated. One bird I possessed could poop at will when clicking the mouse… I'm not sure if that's a skill I'll need or if it's just a gag, but either way it's fun to do. And I'm sure becoming a sea creature will lead to some undersea discoveries once I have more time to explore the depths of the ocean surrounding the island. Both dogs and wild boars are able to dig holes in the ground, which I'm sure will be useful at some point-I just need to find the right spot to dig. Possess a bat and you can use night vision while flapping around on your leathery wings. Other animals have skills I haven't found a use for yet, but I'm confident I will. Once you get used to immersing yourself in a virtual world, an annoying or unattractive GUI can indeed cool your ardor. Or maybe you're on the phone with your spouse and closing your eyes to better give yourself up to the fantasy the two of you are creating. Or you're watching the paid performer as you control her toy. With Sinulator and HighJoy, what you're looking at is your lover's webcam (or possibly your own, to make sure you're showing your partner what you want to show). You don't have to wait for a commercial company to do it."īefore spending a lot of time in 3-D worlds, I would have said that the look and feel of the control panel doesn't matter all that much. "If you want a BDSM skin that's all latex and leather, or some skin relating to some fetish that will make you feel better, you can do it and it's free. " Second Life allows you to build control panels that only show up in your client (called heads-up display or HUD attachments), and you can use that to experiment with your own teledildonics GUI," he says. ("I seem to have single-handedly doubled their price on eBay," qDot told me apologetically over the phone.) Suddenly, the Rez Trance Vibrator shot to the top of everyone's wish list. This news excited not only the convention crowd, but the Second Life residents who were watching the panel through the live video stream online. It also offers anyone with time and coding ability the chance to customize their own teledildonics system. It enables you to send 10 to 20 updates per second to the vibrator, resulting in much smoother speed transitions than the first release. He built a new version entirely with open-source code (from ). (And why this is not standard equipment at every gym across America, I have no idea.)īut he couldn't quite stay away from the vibrator interface. QDot's next project was to connect an exercise bike so you could power your in-world vehicle while getting a good workout, thus ensuring your hotness if your Second Life romance migrated offline. Integrating physical machines with virtual worlds has many more applications than sex, of course. Yet he had proven to himself (and to horny geeks around the world) that the concept was viable. Australia drew a penalty on their next possession and converted for a 3-2 lead. Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA/USC/NYAC) followed on the next possession with a shot that ricocheted off the goalie's hand, off the crossbar, and then back off the goalie's head and into the cage for a 2-2 game. Team USA got on the board with 1:30 to play in the period when Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/UCLA/NYAC) delivered on the power play for a 2-1 game. They followed with a goal less than a minute later for a 2-0 lead. Australia started things off with a power play goal from Ash Southern a little over two minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead. The rest of the match was just as close as the finish. The United States called a timeout without possession of the ball in the final second of the fourth period leading to the penalty call. Team USA battled back from a penalty called with just one second left in regulation, an error that allowed Australia to tie the match and force extra time. Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/Michigan/NYAC) posted 11 saves in net as Australia was held scoreless in both overtime periods. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/Diablo) scored four times, including the go-ahead goal in the first overtime, to push the United States to the victory. They will take on the winner of the Hungary/Spain semifinal. Team USA topped Australia 11-9 in overtime to advance to the final on Thursday, August 9 at 8pm bst/3pm est/12pm pst. As Pang alludes, “The work opens opportunities to understand the effects of diseases like dementia and stroke by considering models of brain shape, which are far easier to deal with than models of the brain’s full array of connections.London, England - August 7 - For the third time in program history the U.S. The research team believes that their findings will make it easier to study the brain and how it changes with age, as well as isolate abnormalities within brain activity as well. “This result counters conventional wisdom, in which activity during different tasks is often assumed to occur in focal, isolated areas of elevated activity, and tells us that traditional approaches to brain mapping may only show the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding how the brain works,” said Pang. To take that music analogy one step further, the research team discovered that neural activity is excited throughout almost the entire brain, similarly to how the vibrations across the length of a guitar or violin string, rather than one just segment, give rise to a musical note. “We found that eigenmodes defined by brain geometry –– its contours and curvature –– represented the strongest anatomical constraint on brain function, much like the shape of a drum influences the sounds that it can make,” explained Alex Fornito, a professor at Turner Institute. Additionally, the team gathered 10,000 maps of brain activity to study eigenmodes - natural patterns of vibration that are the result of the brain’s structure. The researchers evaluated MRI scans from 255 people that were taken as each individual performed a series of different tasks. “These findings raise the possibility of predicting the function of the brain directly from its shape, opening new avenues for exploring how the brain contributes to individual differences in behavior and risk for psychiatric and neurological diseases,” he shared in a news release from the university. Lead author James Pang, from the Turner Institute and Monash University’s School of Psychological Sciences, believes the findings could help doctors potentially diagnose and treat neurological disorders easier. They found that the brain’s shape heavily influences how it works, meaning its function may be more directly affected by its structure than the neural activity going on inside of it. Publishing their work in the journal Nature, scientists in Australia examined the geometry of the brain in relation to its activity. Up until now, little importance has been placed on the actual shape of the brain, but a landmark study has potentially upended the current paradigm. “For over a hundred years, scientists have believed that the connections between the 86 billion neurons in the human brain - think of an electric spark traveling along a spiderweb - form the basis for our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In practice, x almost always represents multiple data points. “Learning” consists of using sophisticated mathematical algorithms to optimize this function so that, given input data x about a certain domain (say, square footage of a house), it will accurately predict some interesting value h(x) (say, market price for said house). In the majority of supervised learning applications, the ultimate goal is to develop a finely tuned predictor function h(x) (sometimes called the “hypothesis”). We will focus primarily on supervised learning here, but the last part of the article includes a brief discussion of unsupervised learning with some links for those who are interested in pursuing the topic. Unsupervised machine learning is when the program is given a bunch of data and must find patterns and relationships therein.Supervised machine learning is when the program is “trained” on a predefined set of “training examples,” which then facilitate its ability to reach an accurate conclusion when given new data.ML solves problems that cannot be solved by numerical means alone.Īmong the different types of ML tasks, a crucial distinction is drawn between supervised and unsupervised learning: Real-world examples of machine learning problems include “Is this cancer?”, “What is the market value of this house?”, “Which of these people are good friends with each other?”, “Will this rocket engine explode on take off?”, “Will this person like this movie?”, “Who is this?”, “What did you say?”, and “How do you fly this thing?” All of these problems are excellent targets for an ML project in fact ML has been applied to each of them with great success. The highly complex nature of many real-world problems, though, often means that inventing specialized algorithms that will solve them perfectly every time is impractical, if not impossible. So if you want your program to predict, for example, traffic patterns at a busy intersection (task T), you can run it through a machine learning algorithm with data about past traffic patterns (experience E) and, if it has successfully “learned,” it will then do better at predicting future traffic patterns (performance measure P). We can do this regardless of the study participant’s verbal or cognitive abilities. My fellowship research project overcomes this hurdle by using electroencephalography (EEG) to measure how the brain registers and processes sounds. For this reason, most research on auditory processing disorder in people with autism has focused on those who have language and cognitive abilities in a normal to high range. But it can be challenging to study auditory processing in people who have difficulty understanding spoken directions or lack the ability to describe what they hear or perceive. A new approach to help those who need it mostĪround a third of children and adults with autism have severe language impairments, and we believe that this group is likely to be more affected by auditory processing disorders. If the brain can’t process these sounds effectively or the sounds are being blocked out, this can present a serious challenge to learning language. Remember, children typically pick up language by listening to people talk and detecting the patterns of that make up speech. Īn integral part of this research is to see if autism-related difficulties in using and understanding language stem from a combination of brain-based auditory processing issues and the behaviors these individuals use to escape the distress and anxiety caused by their sensitivities to sound and social communication more generally (like covering their ears and turning away). I’m pursuing this work under the mentorship of Helen Tager-Flusberg, director of Boston University’s Center for Autism Research Excellence, and Barbara Shinn-Cunningham, director of Boston University’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory and Center for Research in Sensory Communication and Emerging Neural Technology. These insights, we believe, are the first step to developing personalized interventions that can support communication and improve quality of life. Image courtesy of Boston University Center for Autism Research Excellencespectrum. My research aims to deepen our understanding of the brain-activity patterns associated with sound hypersensitivity and difficulty with language in adolescents and young adults on the autism This participant is looking forward to watching Frozen now that her EEG cap is on. Some estimates based on parent reports suggest that up to 80 percent of children with autism process sounds in atypical ways. We know that autism and auditory processing disorders often overlap, though don’t know precisely how often. Parents often notice these “auditory hypersensitivities” when their children are quite young – even before a child is diagnosed with autism. Feeling distressed when surrounded by a lot of chatter or other noise.Humming in response to chatter or other noises.Covering one’s ears in situations that don't seem particularly noisy to most people. If you have autism – or have a child with autism – you may have experienced or seen indications of this difficulty such as the following: But research increasingly suggests that autism often involves difficulties in distinguishing and processing sound – one of the most basic skills needed to understand and use speech. We don’t know what prevents around a third of people with autism from developing language. And it presents challenges in settings that most people might consider “ordinary.” Auditory processing and autism However, for someone with an auditory processing disorder, the difficulty is already present in early childhood. It’s interesting to note that processing sound in noisy environments appears to become more difficult as people age. That’s when we need to really concentrate on the person who’s talking with us. Most people perform this kind of sound processing automatically, though it gets more challenging in noisy settings. You’re probably using both sound and visual cues to do so – focusing on your friend’s mouth and the pitch of her voice. This involves separating her words from the rest of the sounds. To have that a conversation, you need to understand what your friend is saying. You’re surrounded by noises at different volumes. For a good analogy of what a person with an auditory processing disorder experiences, imagine trying to have a meaningful conversation with someone at a noisy party. The mutated gene implicates the extracellular matrix in the regular organization of chrondrocyte columns of the growth plate. Conclusions We suggest that the identified mutation of equine B4GALT7 leads to the typical dwarfism phenotype in Friesian horses due to deficient splicing of transcripts of the gene. Growth retardation is a common manifestation in both of these syndromes. Mutations in B4GALT7 in humans are associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome progeroid type 1 and Larsen of Reunion Island syndrome. As a result, the level of B4GALT7 mRNA in fibroblasts from a dwarf is only 3% compared to normal levels. With that we showed that it impedes splicing of the primary transcript in cultured fibroblasts from a heterozygous horse. The mutation not only affects a conserved arginine codon but also the last nucleotide of the first exon of the gene. The protein is one of the enzymes that synthesize the tetrasaccharide linker between protein and glycosaminoglycan moieties of proteoglycans of the extracellular matrix. The mutation leads to the amino acid substitution p.Arg17Lys of xylosylprotein beta 1,4-galactosyltransferase 7 encoded by B4GALT7. The DNA of four dwarfs and three control Friesian horse was sequenced completely and we identified the missense mutation ECA14:g.4535550C>T that cosegregated with the phenotype in all Friesians analyzed. Results We have localized the genetic cause of the dwarfism phenotype by a genome wide approach to a 3 Mb region on the p-arm of equine chromosome 14. The aim of this study was to identify the gene defect that causes the recessively inherited trait in Friesian horses thus to improve our understanding of the disease process and mechanisms behind also at the human molecular level (‘one health’). The growth plates of dwarfs display disorganized and thickened chondrocyte columns. A striking feature of the condition is the flexor tendon laxity that leads to hyperextension of the fetlock joints. The limbs of dwarfs are short, ribs are dented, while the head looks adult-like at young age and the back appears as relatively normal. Background Inbreeding and population bottlenecks in the ancestry of Friesian horses has led to health issues such as dwarfism. |
